§ Mr. PONSONBYasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the. Sheffield Board of Guardians have adopted a recommendation of their reconstruction committee to appoint ex-Police, Superintendent Morton as prosecution officer at a salary of £220 per annum; and whether, seeing that Mr. Morton is already in receipt of a pension of £400 per annum for his police service and that it is contrary to public policy for an officer who is drawing a pension from one public authority to be employed by another, he will refuse his sanction to the appointment?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINI understand that the officer in question, though formerly nominally a member of the police force has been in the employment of the guardians for more than 20 years being seconded from the local police force for service with them by an arrangement under which the guardians became responsible for his police pay and superannuation. He retired from the police service some five years ago, but has continued his service with the Poor Law authority, and I understand that the guardians of the new union propose to retain him in office. I do not think this is a case for refusing sanction to the appointment proposed.
