§ Mr. WHEATLEYIn the financial year 1922–23 the average weekly cost, per inmate, of all the Poor Law institutions in England and Wales was about 26s. 6d. This amount. includes food, clothing, medicine, fuel and lighting, salaries and other remuneration of doctors, masters, matrons, nurses, attendants and other persons; the cost of the upkeep of buildings and furniture; rent, rates, taxes and insurance, interest on loans for capital works, and provision for repayment of such loans.
