these numbers, where they are serving, and the amount they receive?

Mr. ALEXANDER

The number of naval officers in receipt of exchange compensation is approximately 370. The compensation consists in the conversion of a fixed amount of each monthly payment into dollars at the rate of 2s. to $1 in the following proportions:

Maltese officers, stewards, and cooks are mainly employed on the Mediterranean Station, he will state what steps are to be taken to deal with the officers, stewards, and cooks now serving in ships of the Atlantic Fleet, which will be transferred to the Mediterranean Station on the redistribution, who will become redundant on account of the reduction of sea-going billets; if it is proposed to re-introduce any system of gratuities on discharge: and, if so, can any information be given as to the probable conditions of these grants?

Mr. ALEXANDER

The matter is now under consideration, but no guarantee can be given that any subsidy scheme will be adopted or needed. The changes in officers' stewards and cooks will only be carried out gradually.
