§ Mr. BARKERasked the Minister of Labour if he is aware that William 2207W Solway, of 14, Woodland Terrace, Cwmtillery, Monmouthshire, was unemployed from 8th January, 1924, to 7th April, 1924; that he has only received three weeks' unemployment benefit for this period of 13 weeks; that he has frequently applied for payment, claim 15,439; and will he therefore have this case immediately investigated in order that the legal claim of the applicant may be satisfied?
§ Mr. SHAWI am having inquiries made and will communicate the result immediately to my hon. Friend.
§ Sir P. DAWSONasked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the fact that under the unemployment insurance scheme a married man who is unemployed receives an extra 5s. weekly for his wife, he will consider the advisability of extending this benefit to an unemployed only son of a widow?
§ Mr. SHAWThe case mentioned is only one of several which would have to be considered if an extension of these allowances were thought possible. I cannot therefore, at this stage, give any undertaking in the matter, but I am willing to give consideration to it.
§ Mr. MACLEANasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that John Clougherty, of 116, Queen Street, Govan, is still being refused his unemployment benefit; whether he has considered the matter any further; and what steps he will take to enable this man to receive his benefit?
§ Mr. SHAWI have received no further information about this case since I wrote to my hon. Friend on the 4th April. As I then explained, Mr. Clougherty does not satisfy the statutory conditions, and I regret, therefore, that it is not within my power to take any steps to enable him to receive unemployment benefit.
