§ Sir R. ASKEasked the President of the Board of Education whether the Government proposes to establish equal pay for men and women teachers of the same professional status; and, if so, whether this is to be done by raising the salaries of women teachers or by reducing those of men teachers?
§ Mr. TREVELYANThe Government adhere to the view that the salaries of teachers in State-aided schools should, if possible, be determined, at all events, in the first instance, by agreement between the teachers and the local education authorities who are responsible for their employment and payment. The existing arrangements are now under review by2026W the Burnham Committees, and I do not think it desirable to anticipate the result of their deliberations.
