§ Lieut.-Colonel SPENDER-CLAYasked the First Commissioner of Works whether his attention has been drawn to the danger to pedestrians in Hyde Park owing to the increased traffic since the admission of taxi-cabs; how many accidents have occurred since such admission has been permitted; whether, seeing that the exit from the park at Hyde Park Corner tends to still further increase the congestion of traffic, any additional exit is contemplated; how many extra policemen are now employed on point duty; and what is the total cost involved?
§ Mr. JOWETTThe question of the increased traffic in Hyde Park has received the attention of my Department, and 25 temporary refuges have been erected on the recommendation of the Commissioner of Police. Fifty-two accidents have occurred since the 1st March, and of this number 14 were cases of personal injury, one of which proved fatal. With regard to the question of an additional exit from the park, I would refer the hon. Member to my reply on the 30th ultimo to the Noble Lord the Member for Battersea, South (Viscount Curzon). Five additional policemen have been employed at an estimated cost of £2,250 per annum.
