§ Mr. SHINWELLThe number of mines in Monmouthshire closed since 1920 and not reopened is 23. The list is as follows:
The number of miners normally employed at these mines was 5,341, but I do not know how many of them were thrown out of employment; a considerable number were given work at other mines immediately. I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour that the number of persons in the coal mining industry who were registered as unemployed at the Labour Exchanges in the county of Monmouthshire on the 28th April was 2,147.
