JENKINSasked the Minister of Pensions if he will take steps to remove the penalties imposed upon old-age pensioners who suffer reductions from the State pension in consequence of thrift or friendly assistance; and will he pay special regard to the fact that old-age pensioners who are compelled to reside in Poor Law institutions suffer the full loss of their pension and are consequently thrown wholly upon the local rates?

§ Mr. HARTSHORNIf the hon. Member contemplates the sending of cash 2569W through the post, it would be necessary to register each letter, and the cost of registration alone would amount to about £650,000 a year.
