HC Deb 11 March 1924 vol 170 cc2171-2W
Captain TERRELL

asked the Minister of Transport what steps are being taken by the Government to strengthen and replace, if necessary, road bridges in the country which may not be fitted to carry modern heavy traffic; whether these bridges are scheduled; and, in that case, how many of them there are and by whom the majority of them are owned?

Mr. GOSLING

Provision is made every year in the Road Fund budget for assisting local authorities in the reconstruction and strengthening of road bridges. In addition to this normal provision, a special allocation of £1,750,000 has been made during the current financial year towards bridge works which could usefully be expedited for the relief of unemployment, No schedule is available of bridges needing reconstruction or of the persons or bodies responsible for their maintenance.
