§ Mr. VARLEYasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the amount of the revenue yielded by the Entertainments Duty in the last complete financial year from religious institutions; and whether, in view of the small amount so yielded, he will recommend the abolition of the duty as applied to the said institutions?
§ Mr. SNOWDENIt is not possible to ascertain the yield of the Entertainments Duty from particular classes of entertainment owing to the fact that a considerable part of the duty is paid by means of the sale of stamped tickets and stamps and there is no information as to the nature of the entertainments for which such tickets and stamps are purchased. As regards the latter part of the question I am unable to anticipate my Budget statement.
