§ Mr. LIVINGSTONEasked the Secretary for Scotland whether he is in a position to state the various relief road works in the Island of Lewis the termination of which, it has been intimated, must take place this month; and whether he will explain why such intimation has been given?
Mr. ADAMSONThe grants for road works in Lewis for the relief of unemployment and distress were offered by the Board of Agriculture for Scotland and accepted by the District Committee subject to a terminal date for expenditure which was originally fixed as 31st May, but subsequently postponed to 30th June. These grants, amounting to £14,975, were allocated as follows:
- (1) £10,100 to meet the cost of a scheme for the resurfacing of unclassified roads. It is anticipated that the full amount of this grant will be expended by 30th June.
- (2) £2,375 provided to enable the District Committee to accept a grant offered by the Ministry of Transport of 75 per cent. of the expenditure incurred on a scheme for the resurfacing of main roads and the reconstruction of bridges
266 estimated to cost £19,500. The Board's grant will be advanced in full in respect of the work of road resurfacing completed before 30th June. The local contribution in respect of work still to be done after that date will be provided by the District Committee. - (3) £2,500 to meet expenditure on the further construction of South Loch Erisore Road.
