WOODasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that Mr. Justice Russell has recently granted a declaration that the payment of relief by the Poor Law Guardians of Poplar made during the recent strike to certain labourers for whom work was then available was illegal; and whether he is taking any action in the matter?
§ Mr. WHEATLEYI am aware of the declaration referred to. As regards the second part of the question, surcharges have been made by the district auditor on members of certain boards of guardians in London in respect of relief granted to dock labourers during the strike, and appeals against these surcharges are now before me.
