asked the Minister of Agriculture the number of cases of foot-and-mouth disease during the last month; the number of farms on which there has been a second outbreak during the last six months; the amount of money already paid over to farmers as compensation during the last year out of the provision made by the House for this purpose; and the number of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Orders now existing?

29 outbreaks have occurred during the month ending 12th instant, and second outbreaks have occurred on 49 farms during the six months ended on the same date. £3,323,816 has been paid to farmers as compensation for animals slaughtered owing to foot-and-mouth disease during the last year (13th June, 1923–12th June, 1924). Ten Orders are in force relating to actual infected areas, and eight Orders containing regulations of a general character, in addition to 44 Orders declaring individual premises to be foot-and-mouth disease infected places.

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he can give any information as to the number of cases of foot-and-mouth disease in Holland and the areas where outbreaks have occurred?

Mr. BUXTON

Foot-and-mouth disease has been prevalent in every province in Holland during the current year. 7,723 outbreaks are recorded in the Dutch official returns as having occurred during the months of January to April, 1924, inclusive. The provinces most affected are South Holland, North Holland, North Brabant, Utrecht, and Guelderland. I will have detailed particulars circulated in the OFFICIAL REPORT.
