§ Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHYasked the Minister of Labour the number of persons on the register as unemployed; how many of these are women and young persons, respectively; and how many persons are consistently working short time at present?
§ Mr. SHAWOn 14th July the number of persons on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain was 1,026,000, of whom 187,300 were women and 57,600 young persons between the ages of 14 and 18. The number out of the total who were recorded as on systematic short time and not at work on that date was 31,600, but this figure no doubt falls far short of the total among those recorded as unemployed, who are, in fact, working short time or are otherwise employed intermittently for a particular employer.
