Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the greatly increased cost to boards of guardians of lunatic patients maintained in county asylums he will introduce legislation to increase the sum of 4s. per head at present repaid to the various unions under the Local Government Act, 1888, to at least one-half of the actual cost of maintenance of every such patient?

Mr. COOPER RAWSON

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the increased cost of maintenance of lunatic patients in lunatic asylums now chargeable to boards of guardians, and the inadequacy of the sum of 4s. per head repaid to the unions under the Local Government Act, 1888, he will introduce legislation whereby boards of guardians may be repaid at least one-half of the actual cost of every lunatic patient maintained in a county asylum?

Mr. WHEATLEY

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on the 17th July to a similar question asked by the hon Member for Bedwelty (Mr C. Edwards).

Mr. W. A. JENKINS

asked the Minister of Health if he is aware that, in view of the great increase in the cost of lunatic patients now chargeable to boards of guardians maintained in lunatic asylums, the sum of 4s. per head repaid to the various unions under the Local Government Act, 1888, is totally inadequate, and consequently throws a heavy burden upon local rates; and will he introduce legislation to amend the Local Government Act, 1888, so as to provide for repayment to boards of guardians of at least one-half of the actual cost of every lunatic patient maintained in a county asylum?

Mr. WHEATLEY

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on the 17th July to a similar question asked by the hon. Member for Bedwellty (Mr. C. Edwards).
