§ Mr. LAMBERTasked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that, owing to the soft foundations of the roads, motor traffic is causing more than three times the pre-War expense for maintaining non-classified roads in Devon; and whether he will give increased grants out of the Road Fund to assist the overburdened ratepayers in the maintenance of such roads in the county?
§ Mr. GOSLINGI am aware that the expenditure on the maintenance of unclassified roads in Devon, as in other parts of the country, has greatly increased of recent years, and during 1923–24 special grants amounting to £36,608, were made from the Road Fund for the improvement of the more important roads in the rural areas of that county. As regards the assistance which has been rendered, and which it is proposed to render towards the improvement of roads in Devon generally, I would refer the right hon. Member to the answer which I gave to the Noble Lord the Member for South Battersea (Viscount Curzon) on the 24th June, of which I am sending him a copy.
