HC Deb 21 July 1924 vol 176 cc908-9W
Major HORE-BELISHA

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the average number of pensions coming under the pre-War Pensions Act that are surrendered each week owing to the deaths of the recipients, specifying the category in which the surrenders fall and the value of the surrenders in each case?

Mr. GRAHAM

The average number of pensions to which increases have been added under the Pensions (Increase) Act, 1920, ceasing per week owing to the death of the pensioner and the average annual amount of the increases so lapsing in each case are as follow:

Category. Average number of deaths per week. Average annual amount of the increases falling out of payment per week.
£
Army 13 163
Navy 12.5 196
Civil Service 14.3 284
Teachers 4.85 87
Police (Metropolitan Police figures only). 5.1 115
The above figures do not represent a net decrease of the existing charge since new increases are being made from time to time as other pre-1920 pensioners attain the age of 60.
