HC Deb 27 February 1924 vol 170 c497W
Mr. HOGGE

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that ex-service men have proved themselves very competent shorthand typists in certain Government Departments; and whether he will consider the possibility of arranging free courses of training in shorthand for disabled men now unemployed on the books of the Joint Substitution Board, with a view to their re-allocation as shorthand typists in other Government Departments?

Mr. SHAW

Shorthand-typing in Government Departments is regarded as work proper for women. As there are very few commercial openings for men shorthand-typists, I do not think the suggested provision of training would be justified by the prospects of employment which are likely to be available.
