HC Deb 27 February 1924 vol 170 cc483-4W
Mr. T. THOMSON

asked the Minister of Health (1) what means he proposes to take to prevent local authorities subsidising the building of houses 30 to 40 to the acre, seeing that he has intimated to them that they are at liberty to exercise their discretion as regards the density per acre of houses erected under the 1923 Housing Act;

(2) whether he has reserved to himself the power to refuse the State subsidy for the building of houses by private enterprise at a density of 30 to 40 per acre, when the same have been approved by a local authority under powers given in Circular 388a, page 11, paragraph 8; and, if not, what steps he proposes to take to enable him to withhold the State subsidy in those cases where he disapproves of building more than 30 to 40 houses to the acre on uncompleted sites?

Mr. WHEATLEY

I propose to take steps in connection with future approvals of local authorities' housing schemes to require the authorities to submit to me any proposals for building at a density exceeding 20 to the acre.
