§ Lieut.-Colonel MEYLERasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many natives of Nigeria suffered the extreme penalty during the year 1922–23; and in how many cases were the accused permitted to employ legal assistance in the preparation of their defence?
Mr. THOMASDuring 1922 88 persons suffered capital punishment in Nigeria (including the mandated territory of the British sphere of the Cameroons). It is not known whether these persons employed legal assistance in the preparation of their defence, but there was no legal bar to their doing so.
