HC Deb 02 May 1923 vol 163 c1419W
Mr. AMMON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that on the 24th September, 1919, great destruction and loss of property was caused in East Bengal by a cyclone; that among those who suffered material damage were a number of Post Office employés; and whether steps can be taken to obtain relief from the Post Office Guarantee Fund to which the Post Office employés themselves contribute?

Earl WINTERTON

I find from the Indian Post Office Report for 1919–20 that the cyclone of September, 1919, caused considerable damage to Post Office property in Eastern Bengal. Advances of pay were granted to postal employés rendered destitute to assist them in setting up house again, and rewards were also given to employés who did well in the emergency. From the same Report it appears that a sum of Rs. 1,036 was paid from the Post Office Guarantee Fund to postal servants for loss of private property, but I have no particulars of the circumstance.
