§ Sir A. HOLBROOKasked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that not only is a head tax of 35s. imposed on 1394W every Britisher landing in America, but that to get a passport viséd by the United States of America a further charge of 45s. is made, making £4 for every Britisher who lands; and whether he will consider the desirability of the imposition of a reciprocal tax on Americans landing in this country in the interest of the national revenue?
§ Major BOYD-CARPENTERI have been asked to reply. I have no information about the head tax said to be imposed on British subjects landing in America, and I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply given by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer to the hon. Member for South Derbyshire (Mr. Lorrimer) on the 15th February, in which he stated that he was not prepared to discriminate against citizens of the United States in the manner suggested. As regards visâ fees, Americans applying for visas to come to this country are charged a fee the equivalent, as nearly as may be, to the fees charged to British subjects seeking to go to the United States.
