SAMUELasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that our exports to Mexico last year were valued at 19,000,000 dollars as against 350,000,000 of exports from the United States of America to Mexico; whether he is aware that this disparity is due to fear of ill-treatment of British goods and capital, based on past experience; and what steps he proposes to take to remove the apprehensions of British exporters that they may again be subjected to loss by the action of the Mexican authorities?
§ Lieut.-Colonel BUCKLEYThe answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, I am not aware that British exporters are subjected to worse treatment in Mexico than United States exporters; the reasons for the greater volume of the American exports are to be sought rather in geographical and general economic causes. As regards the third part of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer that I gave to him on Monday, the 19th instant.
