§ Mrs. WINTRINGHAMasked the Home Secretary whether the post of governor of the Borstal institution, Aylesbury, is yet filled; if not, whether a suitable applicant would be debarred by reason of being a married woman; and, if so, whether it could be treated as a special appointment, not bound by Civil Service rules?
Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSONA candidate has been chosen, and the arrangements for filling the post are approaching completion. The question of marriage did not arise, but I may say that the general rule for Civil Service appointments, and for appointments in the Prison Service, is against the employment of married women, although exceptions can be made where the Treasury and the Civil Service Commissioners are satisfied that the interests of the public service so require.
