§ Sir R. SANDERSAny ex-service men who desired to avail themselves of the preference given to such men over civilians under the Land Settlement Scheme were required to send in their applications before the 1st December, 1920. The number of ex-service men who applied to the Durham County Council for small holdings before that date was 752, of whom 439 have been rejected as unsuitable, or have withdrawn their applications. The number who have applied since 1st December, 1920, is 154. The following statement shows the number of ex-service men settled on the land by the Durham County Council each year since the inauguration of the Land Settlement Scheme in December, 1918. The Ministry has no information regarding the number of ex-service men settled by the council in the year 1917 and 1918
