HC Deb 02 July 1923 vol 166 cc47-8W
Mr. EDWARDS

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he has received a letter from the Mine Rescue Workers' Association (South Wales and Mon.) complaining of the action of the coalowners in giving notice to reduce the retaining fee from £5 per annum to £3 and from 10s. plus train fare for each quarterly attendance for efficiency training to 5s. plus train fare; whether he is aware that the above notice was sent on the 8th June, 1923, and was to operate from January, 1923, six months prior to the notice; and whether, seeing the importance of this work and the necessity for retaining the goodwill of these men, who have fitted themselves for this dangerous and necessary work, he will take steps to have the matter put right?

Lieut.-Colonel LANE-FOX

I have received the letter in question, and am making inquiries on the subject.
