HC Deb 02 July 1923 vol 166 cc48-9W
Sir T. BENNETT

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether it is the intention of His Majesty's Government to appoint a consular official in Iraq to safeguard the interests of British traders in that country?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

Consular functions in Iraq are at present undertaken by the High Commissioner. The appointment of a consular representative at Basrah is under consideration.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the present political situation in Iraq; and when it is proposed to hold the elections?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

The Secretary of State was recently informed by the High Commissioner that the Iraq Government considered the political situation to be such as to admit of the elections being held at an early date. I understand that preliminary measures are now being taken, but I am unable to state on what date the elections will actually be held?
