HC Deb 02 July 1923 vol 166 c56W
Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India if he is aware that, by the Government of Burma Financial Department Notification No. 24, of 25th March, 1920, a special Burma allowance for 10 years, from 20th March, 1920, was sanctioned by the Secretary of State for officers of departments not recruited in Burma to meet the extra cost of living in Burma, and that this allowance has only been paid to officers of the Burma military police from 1st October, 1922; and if he will communicate with the Government of India or the local Government with a view to securing the payment of the allowance to officers of the Burma military police, as to officers of other departments, from the date from which it was sanctioned?

Earl WINTERTON

Having made inquiry, as promised in my reply to my hon. and gallant Friend on the 3rd August last, I have ascertained that the grant of Burma allowances to British officers of the Burma military police had effect as stated from the 1st October last. The local Government, acting within their financial powers, considered whether the allowances should be granted from an earlier date, but were unable to do so owing to the heavy expenditure which this would have involved. My Noble Friend is communicating further with the Government of India.
