asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport if he will give the list and amounts of money granted to the Midlands (Worcestershire, Warwickshire, and Staffordshire) for relief work during the 12 months ending 30th June, 1923; and what schemes have been sanctioned at the moment for the purpose of relieving distress during the forthcoming winter?

The grants sanctioned during the 12 months ending 30th June, 1923, for road works in the area in question, put in hand with a view to mitigating unemployment, amounted to a total of £220,796, on works estimated to cost £441,616. Further schemes in the area, to an estimated toital cost of £612,434, are under consideration, and a detailed list of the schemes and amounts of the grants is being communicated to the hon. Member.
