§ Mr. COLLISONasked the Minister of Health the proportion of persons in England and Wales in receipt of Poor Law relief in urban and rural areas, respectively, on the 31st March, 1923.
Mr. CHAMBERLAINThe returns do not show the proportion of persons in receipt of Poor Law relief in urban and rural areas respectively, but the number of persons in receipt of relief per 10,000 of the population, on 31st March, 1923, in unions in England and Wales in which the whole or part of a populous urban area is situate was 465, and in other unions 255. The term "populous urban area" means a Metropolitan borough; a county borough, or other borough or urban district with a population, in 1921, of over 50,000.
