§ Mr. A. BENNETTasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, taking the reduced taxation in the present Budget, he can state how it compares per head of the population in respect of direct taxation, indirect taxation, and total taxation, respectively, with the equivalent taxation in existence in France, United States, Italy, and Germany?
§ Major BOYD-CARPENTERThe taxation provided for in the Budget for the current year amounts to £10 2s. 1d. per head of direct taxation, and £5 16s. of indirect, making £15 18s. 1d. in all. For54W particulars of the other countries referred to I will refer my hon. Friend to the answers given to my hon. Friends the Members for East Lewisham (Lieut.-Colonel Pownall), the Moseley Division (Mr. Hannon), and the Henley Division (Captain Terrell) on the 22nd February, the 27th February and 29th March. I must, however, repeat that international comparisons of this kind, unless subject to innumerable qualifications, are apt to be very misleading.
