HC Deb 09 April 1923 vol 162 cc887-8W
Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any information showing that the repayment by the Bank of France to the Bank of England of a debt of £55,000,000 has been made contingent on the repayment by the British Government of the gold lodged in London by the Bank of France as partial cover for a Government loan; and can he assure the House that His Majesty's Government will not acquiesce in any attempt to treat the gold as an offset for a private debt?

Mr. BALDWIN

The hon. and gallant Member is misinformed. There is no connection whatever between the debt of the Bank of France to the Bank of England, and the gold deposited with the Bank of England in connection with French Government debt to the British Government.
