HC Deb 26 May 1922 vol 154 cc1570-2W
Mr. F. ROBERTS

asked the Minister of Pensions whether Mrs. Meakin, late of St. Helens, now of Albert Terrace, Stafford, widow of the late Private A. H. Meakin, No. 204,259, Labour Corps, is entitled to treatment allowances from the St. Helens Local Committee for the time her husband was in the sanatorium, and also funeral expenses; whether the result of the medical board which came to hand after her husband's decease showed that the man was suffering from tuberculosis, but the decision was that it was not attributable and non-aggravated; whether, in view of the evidence sub- mitted, and the fact that the man was perfectly sound on enlistment, there is a further opportunity for the widow to appeal against the decision; and whether, in cases where widows do not come under the Royal Warrant, there is any opportunity for them to obtain assistance in any way from Ministry funds?

Mr. MACPHERSON

As the fatal illness was unconnected with the late soldier's military service, payment of treatment allowances or funeral expenses were not admissible. In view of the fact that marriage took place after discharge, I regret that the widow is not eligible for compensation from my Department.
