Mr. MACLEANasked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the number of British subjects lying in prison in the United States of America, and who have been sentenced during the last four years for so-called political offences; whether any representations have been made to the United States Government for their release; and, if so, what reply has been received?
§ Mr. McCURDYI am unable to say how many British subjects are imprisoned in the United States for offences of a political character. Certain British subjects, among others, were sentenced to terms of imprisonment in 1919 for such offences, and an appeal to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals resulted in the decision of the trial Court being upheld. No representations on the subject have been made to the United States Government.
