HC Deb 21 March 1922 vol 152 cc281-2W
Sir H. HOPE

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has taken place at Prestonpans, in the county of Haddington; whether three cows have died from the disease, and if they laid unburied for over 48 hours; and whether any adequate steps have been taken to prevent the workers, moving about at the dairy, from spreading the disease by their boots, etc., coming in contact with infection?

Sir A. BOSCAWEN

I am informed that two cows died on infected premises at Prestonpans, and that owing to difficulty in finding a suitable place in the vicinity for burial, they remained unburied for about 48 hours. It should be borne in mind that the outbreak took place in a town, and 102 animals, not three, as suggested in the question, had to be buried. Meanwhile they were protected under cover, and careful attention was given to the disinfection of the workers.
