§ Lieut.-Colonel HURSTasked the Home Secretary how many reformatory and industrial schools are being closed; how many superintendents and trades instructors are being consequently dismissed; and whether any help is being given to those dismissed to find new work?
§ Mr. SHORTTAbout 25 reformatory and industrial schools have recently been closed or will shortly be closed for reasons of economy, and about the same number of superintendents and trade instructors respectively are affected. In some cases the officers are being transferred to other902W schools, and in other cases the schools are being used for other purposes and the staff retained. Where it has been necessary to dispense with the services of the staff the managers of the closing schools will, I am sure, do what they can to help the officers concerned to obtain other work.
