HC Deb 02 March 1922 vol 151 c587W
Sir J. D. REES

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can give the House any information regarding the East Indian Railway strike?

Mr. MONTAGU

I have, I think, very little beyond what has already appeared in the Press. Immediate measures were taken at all important points to safeguard the line and its working. At its greatest extent it covered almost the whole Indian staff of the Locomotive Department and a majority of that staff in the Traffic Department and the Carriage and Wagon Department at practically all large stations. Nevertheless essential passenger, coal and goods traffic was maintained. The Government of India consider that the situation is improving, that the men are beginning to return to work and that traffic conditions are becoming easier.
