Sir J. D. REESasked the President of the Board of Education whether any and, if so, how many officers of the Army and Navy are being educated at Oxford and Cambridge and other universities at the expense of the taxpayer; what charges are being incurred for this purpose; and when further expenditure of this nature will entirely cease?
§ Mr. FISHERThe number of officers and men now in receipt of grants under the scheme administered by the Board of Education for the higher education of ex-service students at universities and other institutions of higher education is, approximately, 10,000. The estimated expenditure for the current financial year is £2,000,000, and for 1922–23 £1,020,000. I anticipate that the expenditure will almost entirely cease in 1925–26.
