§ Viscountess ASTORasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that an influential society, composed of Chinese and British merchants, has been formed in Hong Kong with the object of securing the abolition of the mui tsai system; and whether His Majesty's Government would raise any objection to the issue by this society of a manifesto informing the mui tsai of Hong Kong that they are perfectly free agents, and are at all times free to leave those masters and mistresses who give them no pay, and Offer their services for wages to bonâ fide employers?
§ Mr. CHURCHILLI am aware of the existence of this society, and I can see no objection to them issuing a statement as to the actual status of these girls, but I will consult the Governor on the point.
