HC Deb 09 February 1922 vol 150 cc319-20W
Mr. MOSLEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will state the number of articles which have never been manufactured in this country and which have been included in the Schedule of articles chargeable with duty under Part I of the Safeguarding of Industries Act?

Mr. BALDWIN

It would not be possible to give the information desired by the hon. Member without prolonged and minute investigation, as no doubt the hon. Member will realise if he will examine the list in detail. I may, however, point out that the object of Part I of the Safeguarding of Industries Act was to encourage the development of the industries to which it relates and their extension of their range of production to varieties of goods not hitherto produced in this country. It is too early to form a definite judgment as to the effect of the Act in this direction, but I am satisfied that the desired extension is taking place.
