HC Deb 09 February 1922 vol 150 c314W
Mr. BRIANT

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office what is the present peace strength of the French and British Armies?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

The strength of the British Army on 1st January was:

  • Regular Army, 193,000, all ranks.
  • Territorial Army, 135,000, all ranks.
These figures exclude the troops serving in India. The present peace strength of the French Army, as budgetted for by the "projet de loi" for 1922, is 736,000, all ranks. This figure does not include those troops for the French Colonial Army, which amount to approximately 54,000.
