HC Deb 04 December 1922 vol 159 c1257W
Mr. KIRKWOOD

asked the First Commissioner of Works, as representing the Secretary for Scotland, if he is aware that the education authority of the county of Dumbarton has cut the salaries of the teachers without asking their consent; and has the Scottish Education Department given its approval to these reductions in accordance with the provisions of the Education (Scotland) Act, 1918?

Sir J. BAIRD

The education authority have submitted for the approval of the Department a modification of their salary scheme involving certain reductions of salary as from 16th August, 1922. The modification proposed is still under consideration and cannot have statutory effect unless and until it receives the Department's approval. The Department understand, however, that the teachers' representatives upon the joint committee of representatives of the education authority and teachers have now agreed to depart from their request for reconsideration of the scheme, on the understanding that any cases of special hardship will be considered by the joint committee.
