HC Deb 04 December 1922 vol 159 cc1246-7W
Mr. A. T. DAVIES

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been directed to the concerts and other educational work at Wormwood Scrubs, Pentonville, and other of His Majesty's prisons; what, in the view of the governors of these prisons, has been the result; and is it the intention of His Majesty's Government to develop this work?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I cannot do better than refer the hon. Member to the Annual Report of the Prison Commis- sioners for 1921–1922, which gives an account of what has been and is being done in this direction. The governors and chaplains of the prisons testify to the good results on the conduct, demeanour, and general mental outlook of the prisoners. It is the intention of the Prison Commissioners to proceed with this work with the assistance of voluntary helpers, to whom they are sincerely grateful.
