HC Deb 11 April 1922 vol 153 c250W
Sir J. D. REES

asked the Postmaster-General whether the members of the Nottingham branch of the National Citizens Union protest against the action of the local postal authorities in making the last collection of letters, without notifying the public, in some cases as early as 5.30 p.m., and ask that the later hour of collection be restored, as at present great inconvenience is occasioned by the alteration?

Mr. KELLAWAY

I have received the representation in question. The last collection of letters at Nottingham is still made between 7.45 and 8.45 p.m. Some boxes are cleared about 15 minutes earlier than before, but others from 15 to 30 minutes later. These, and the changes in the afternoon collections, were necessitated by the introduction of motor van working in place of collections by horse-drawn vans or by postmen on foot. It would not have been economical to retain the old hours of collection.
