§ Mr. AMMONasked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that, arising out of a recent demonstration of unemployed at an engineering works in Camberwell, two men, one a cripple, were arrested on a charge of assaulting the police, and have since been placed on remand; and whether he will inquire into the allegation that after arrest these men were assaulted in the cells by the police?
§ Mr. SHORTTI am informed by the Commissioner of Police that two men were arrested on the 29th March in the circumstances indicated in the first part of the question, and that they have been remanded after appearing twice before the magistrate. I have made inquiry, and cannot find any reason for thinking that the men have been roughly handled by the police, either at the police station or elsewhere. No complaint has been made by the men concerned.
