§ Dr. MACNAMARAThe percentage of miners registered as unemployed in the South Yorkshire coalfields at 28th October was 28. Various local authorities in the area have submitted schemes to the Ministry of Transport and the Unemployment Grants Committee towards the cost, of which grants totalling £191,457 have been sanctioned. The number of men for whom employment has been found on these works is approximately 3,700. As regards further assistance, the local authorities concerned may submit proposals to the Ministry of Transport and the Unemployment Grants Committee, who have power to make contributions towards the cost of schemes in accordance with the proposals outlined by the Prime Minister on the 19th October.
