HC Deb 04 March 1921 vol 138 cc2183-4W
Colonel NEWMAN

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he can give the number of scholars attending and the number of teachers employed in the 30 continuation schools which have been recently opened by the London Education Authority; and will he also give the syllabus of instruction at the schools for male and female scholars, respectively?

Mr. FISHER

The number of day continuation schools in London at present is 24, and not 30, as stated in the Question. The number of young persons in attendance at them is 14,446. The numbers of teachers are 189 full time, and 49 part time. The board do not prescribe syllabuses of instruction, but I will send the hon. and gallant Member a copy of some suggestions issued by the London County Council to the teachers in these schools.

Mr. BRIANT

asked the President of the Board of Education if he can supply statistics showing for the county of London how many boys and girls having reached the age of 14 are attending the continuation schools for eight hours a week; and how many of these are unemployed?

Mr. FISHER

The number of boys and girls in attendance at day continuation schools in London are 7,659 and 6,787, respectively. It has not been ascertained how many of these are unemployed, but the London County Council estimate the number at about 7,000.
