§ Mr. PENNEFATHERasked the Minister of Transport if his attention has been drawn to a resolution passed by the Liverpool City Council on the 5th January last requesting him to cause an inquiry to be held into the railway system of the City of Liverpool and district, with a view to the better provision of transport facilities both for passengers and goods within and between the area of the city and the adjacent districts on both sides of the Mersey, and to make public as soon as possible the full report thereon; and what action he is taking, or proposes to take, in connection with the matter?
§ Mr. NEALImmediately following receipt of the resolution from the Liverpool City Council a communication was sent to them asking for information as to the evidence of need for additional transport facilities which led them to request an inquiry, and as a result a meeting took place in Liverpool on the 24th February between representatives of the Liverpool City Council, of the Bootle County Borough Council, of the railway companies, and of this Ministry. It was decided at that meeting to set up a small committee, to be nominated by the councils and the railway companies, for the purpose of 1645W examining and reporting upon any need there may be for additional passenger facilities. To this committee the Ministry of Transport will render assistance. It was decided not to proceed at present with a similar investigation of facilities for goods traffic.
