HC Deb 01 March 1921 vol 138 cc1653-4W
Major MOLSON

asked the Minister of Agriculture what is number of the staff employed at Kew Gardens and whether they are required to work overtime; and, if that is so, if some additional staff could be taken on to give employment to ex-service men and women who helped during the War and are now out of employment?

Sir R. SANDERS

The total number of staff employed at Kew Gardens is 220, comprising 36 administrative and scientific staff and 184 industrial (labourers, gardeners, etc.). The number of ex-service men already employed is 145. Overtime is reduced to the lowest possible amount, but it cannot be obviated entirely by the employment of additional stall owing to the nature of the duties to be performed.
