Member for the Pollok Division of Glasgow, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, what has been the aggregate cost of compiling, printing, distributing, and selling the pamphlet entitled, "The Coming Census, Why it is taken, and How it is taken"; how many copies have been sold; and what are the net receipts?
Mr. YOUNGThe total cost of printing and paper of the pamphlet in question was £400. It was prepared for and issued to teachers in elementary schools, for the purpose of instructing the public in the accurate filling in of census returns. Such official instructions are normally issued through the Board of Education on the occasion of a census; and the cost of compilation and distribution of the pamphlet for this purpose cannot be separated from 1129W the general administrative expenses of necessary census arrangements. A certain number of additional copies of the pamphlet were printed in a form suitable for sale to individual members of the public by the Stationery Office on the 1130W usual terms. The cost of printing these additional copies was £62, included in the £400; and it is anticipated that the net receipts, after allowing for distributing and selling expenses, will amount to £120.
